Itinerary

Day 1: Volta Velha Reserve

Arrival and reception at the airport followed by transfer to the Volta Velha Private Reserve in Itapoá. After a welcome coffee and accommodation, the birding trip starts in the reserve’s headquarters. Target species will be Kaempfer’s Tody-Tyrant, Restinga Tyrannulet, Three-striped Flycatcher, Azure Jay, Black-backed Tanager, Green-headed Tanager, Brazilian Tanager, Black-legged Dacnis, Blue Dacnis, and Green Honeycreeper. Dinner.

Day 2: Volta Velha Reserve

After breakfast birding in the three trails of the reserve. Target species will be Yellow-legged Tinamou, White-necked hawk, Crescent-chested Puffbird, Channel-billed Toucan, Yellow-throated Woodpecker, Blond-crested Woodpecker, Rufous-capped Antthrush, UnicoloredAntwren, Russet-winged Spadebill, Gray-hooded Attila, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, and White-bearded Manakin. At night, after dinner birding and searching for Mottled Owl, Tawny-browed Owl, Black-capped Screech-Owl, Common Potoo, and Pauraque. Breakfest, lunch and dinner.

Day 3: Babitonga Bay

After wake up early we will birding along the way to Pomerode, searching for the Parana Antwren and with a great birding day in Joinville in the great Babitonga Bay, were target species will be Scarlet Ibis, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Little Blue Heron, and Roseate Spoonbill, with good opportunities for watching missed species in the Volta Velha Reserve. After lunch, transfer to Pomerode. Breakfest, lunch and dinner.

Day 4: Pomerode

After breakfast birding in the Turquia hill. Target species will be Short-tailed Hawk, Saffron Toucanet, Yellow-fronted Woodpecker, Ochre-collared Piculet, Giant Antshrike, Ochre-rumped Antbird, White-bearded Antshrike, Spotted Bamboowren, Black-billed Scythebill, White-collared Foliage-gleaner, Ochre-breasted Foliage-gleaner, Drab-breasted Pygmy-Tyrant, Large-headed Flatbill, Unicolored Finch, and Black-throated Grosbeak. Breakfest, lunch and dinner.

Day 5: Pomerode

After breakfast birding in the submontane Atltantic Forest. Target birds will be Red-breasted Toucan, Tufted Antshrike, Gray-capped Tyrannulet, Bare-throated Bellbird, Hooded Berryeater, Yellow-legged Trush, Green-winged Saltator, Olive-green Tanager, Brown Tanager, Green-throated Euphonia. After lunch three hour drive to Eco Pousada Rio dos Touros in Urupema. Birding during all the day in hotel headquarters. Target species are Red-spectackled Parrot (Mars to July), Vinaceous Parrot, Robust Woodpecker, Large-tailed Antshrike, Planalto Tapaculo, Striolated Tit-Spinetail, Black-and-White Monjita, and Saffron-cowled Blackbird. Night birding for Rusty-barred Owl and Long-tufted Screech-Owl. Breakfest, lunch and dinner.

Day 6: Urupema

After breakfast birdwatching in Araucaria forests and high altitude grassland in the city of Urupema. Target species will be Yellow-billed Teal, Yellow-billed Pintail, American Kestrel, Long-tailed Cinclodes, Crested Black-Tyrant, Hellmayr’s Pipit, Long-tailed Reed Finch, Lesser Grass-Finch, Bay-chested Warbling-Finch, Black-bellied Seedeater, Chopi Blackbird and Yellow-rumped Marshbird. Breakfest, lunch and dinner.

Day 7: Urupema

Birding in the high montane forest. Target species will be Yellow-browed Woodpecker, Speckle-breasted Antpitta, Mottled Piculet, Mouse-colored Tapaculo, Planalto Woodcreeper, Canebrake Groundcreeper, Serra do Mar Tyrannulet, Shear-tailed Gray Tyrant, Brown-breasted Pygmy-Tyrant, Azure Jay, Gray-throated Warbling-Finch, and White-browed Warbler. In late afternoon transfer to Laguna. Breakfest, lunch and dinner.

Day 8: Laguna

After breakfast birding in the adjacent Gi Beach and lowland wetlands. Target species will be Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Willet, Rufous-chested Dotterel, Common Miner, White Monjita, and Scarlet-headed Blackbird. Lunch in hotel followed by a birding in Mar Grosso Beach searching for Great Grebe, Collared Plover, White-backed Stilt, Royal Tern, Yellow-billed Tern, South American Tern, and Brown-hooded Gull. Also a good place for watching Bottlenose Dolphins. Breakfest, lunch and dinner.

Day 9: Laguna

After breakfest birding in Ponta da Galheta beah, Farol de Santa Marta, Campos Verdes and Lagoa do Camacho. Target species will be Long-winged Harrier, Crested Doradito, Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, Brown-and-yellow Marshbird, Yellow-winged Blackbird, and Scarlet-headed Blackbird. At night transfer to Florianópolis. Breakfest, lunch and dinner.
